Description

NGK Ruthenium HX FR7BHX-S (92400) Spark Plug — Specifications, Features & Applications

The NGK FR7BHX-S, carried under stock number 92400, is part of NGK’s Ruthenium HX line — a high-ignitability upgrade plug built specifically for turbocharged, direct-injection engines that put more strain on ignition systems than naturally aspirated designs. It’s best known as the correct-fitment plug for Volkswagen and Audi’s widely used 2.0T (EA888) engine, though its 14 mm thread and short 19 mm reach mean it also cross-references against a handful of other four-cylinder platforms.

Unlike the standard Double Fine Electrode (DFE) design used elsewhere in the Ruthenium HX range, the FR7BHX-S uses NGK’s PSPE — Projected Square Platinum Electrode — construction. The square-cut, cut-back ground electrode exposes more of the flame kernel to the surrounding mixture instead of shrouding it, which helps ignition stay consistent under the higher cylinder pressures and less uniform mixtures typical of boosted, direct-injection combustion.

Key Features

Projected Square Platinum Electrode design for boosted engines. The FR7BHX-S swaps the usual opposed fine-wire ground electrode for a square-cut, cut-back platinum design that exposes more of the flame kernel to the mixture. This is tuned specifically for turbocharged, direct-injection engines, where cylinder pressures and mixture conditions vary more than in naturally aspirated engines.

Ruthenium alloy center electrode. NGK’s patented ruthenium tip material resists electrical erosion and high-temperature wear better than platinum alone, keeping the gap stable and the spark consistent as the plug accumulates mileage.

Platinum-tipped ground electrode. The cut-back platinum ground design supports a more complete fuel burn under boost, translating into quicker throttle response, a smoother idle, and better resistance to fouling — a common issue on carbon-prone direct-injection engines.

Solid copper core. A 98%-pure copper core runs through the center electrode, pulling heat away efficiently and letting NGK hold this plug at heat range 7 — a range well suited to the sustained heat load of a turbocharged four-cylinder.

Corrosion-resistant, corrugated shell. Trivalent metal plating protects the shell against rust and thread seizing in an aluminum head, while corrugated ribs on the insulator help prevent flashover, keeping spark energy directed at the gap instead of tracking down the plug’s exterior.

Reinforced ceramic insulator. The pure alumina silicate insulator is built for strength and improved heat transfer, resisting the dielectric punch-through that can cause misfires as the plug ages under boost.

Vehicles Using NGK FR7BHX-S (92400)

This plug is factory-fit or a direct OE-spec replacement across a wide range of vehicles, with the bulk of demand concentrated in Volkswagen and Audi’s 2.0T (EA888) engine family. Commonly referenced fitments include:

Manufacturer Representative Models
Volkswagen Golf, GTI, Eos, Jetta, Passat, Tiguan, CC
Audi A3, A4, A5, A6, Q5, TT, S5, R8
Chevrolet Cruze 1.4L Turbo
Buick Encore 1.4L
Honda Civic 1.6L (older platforms)
Acura RSX 2.0L
Porsche Cayenne 4.5L V8

Because Volkswagen and Audi have specified slightly different plugs across EA888 generations (Gen 1, Gen 2, Gen 3) and different states of tune, exact fitment can vary by model year even within the 2.0T family. Always cross-check against the plug currently installed or the OE part number on your engine before ordering, since a mismatch between generations can affect heat range suitability.
